Li Yanqing,

According to resources, Li Yanqing, former funder of Tianlian Century, has joined Hongkong Money China to oversee its game business in mainland China. 

It's said that after the purchase of Hangzhou Tianchang Tech. with RMB 59.5 million at the end of last year, the company had been through a reorganization. Money China has set up a Chinese game business group on Shanghai. Li Yanqing will be the president of the company, in charge of the strategy, game development and operation.

When interviewed, Li Yanqing confirmed the news to our reporter, but refused to give more details. In the near future, the group will hold a news conference to release the news, including new teams and new products.

Li Yanqing left Tianlian in early 2008. It's said that he was invited by EA and Giant Interactive after the departure.

Baidu to Launch Platform for Web-Based Games

Baidu Inc. , Chinese leading search engine, recently launched its own entertainment platform. There are six web-based games launched on the platform: Under the Sun (Zhongheng Tianxia), Left Bank of the Sky (Tiankong Zuo'an), Fangbianmian Sanguo, Luanwu Chunqiu, Rise of Empire and XBA Basketball Manager.

According to the introduction on the official website, the platform will be open on April 23rd.
The payment page of Under the Sun is directed to the website of Shanda; the payment page of Left Bank of the Sky is directed to the website of operator Huancheng Interactive; while the rest four are directed to 51Wan. All of this confirmed the cooperation between Baidu and Shanda.
The Baidu game account, which is independent from Baidu's current passport system,  is needed to play some of the games.

Baidu made its entry into game business through web-based games instead of traditional online games, which was its big move after entering C2C and IM industries.

Powerlead To Held Operator Conference in Zhuhai City

To improve the communication between game developers and operators, Shenzhen Powerlead held the Game Developer Conference 2008 & TianDao Seminar in Zhuhai City on April 17th, 2008.

The conference will last three days, in Royal HotSpring, Zhuhai. Li Ruijie (chairman of Powerlead), Jia Ke (President of Powerlead), Zhang Yun (executive VP), Tian Bo (VP of marketing) , Zhang Jiwen (VP of planning) will attend the conference. Operators from every realms will also  present at the meeting.
During the conference, Li Ruijie (chairman of Powerlead) and Jia Ke (President of Powerlead), will present the future vision of Powerlead in  the future; Zhang Yun (executive VP), will make a presentation on the financial plan of Powerlead in 2008; Tian Bo (VP of marketing) ,will make a presentation on the summary of 2007 and plans for 2008.

Another keypoint of the conference is the related information of its new product Tiandao, and the discussion on diversified operation. During the conference, Zhang Jiwen, marketing VP of Powerlead will make a product presentation on Tiandao; Marketing VP Tianbo will make a scheme and presentation foor Diversified Operation.

The third iResearch New Economy Conference 2008 was held on April 9th. This yearly conference presented New Economy Awards to companies with excellent performance between 2007 to 2008. Perfect World was awarded the Best Development Strategy Enterprise 2007-2008 in the conference.

Baidu Invades Online Game Market

Chinese leading IT company Baidu (BIDU.Nasdaq) is going to online game market.

 

Recently, industry insiders revealed to us that Baidu was in secrect negotiation with online game companies, to discuss about the possibilities of cross operation. Yesterday, senior executives from Baidu confirmed the news, and said that Baidu was secrestly planning to invade online game market, with multiple game operating coming soon. According to previous information, Baidu was going to operate an online game with a Nasdaq listed  online game company. But as the information gathered, Baidu will enter into cooperation agreement with more that one company, including one in Chengdu.

 

In year 2007, the market value of Chinese online game was 12.8 billion RMB, as in the next 4-5 years, the market will keep growing  as a rate of over 20%. By 2011, the market will reach 40.1 billion RMB. It is the prospetive market attracts Baidu.

 

After C2C, IM, the business scope of Baidu expands this year.

Giant Interactive announced on April 14th, that it will open a research center in Southwest China.
Shi Yuzhu, CEO and president of Giant interactive said: Research was always the focus of the company. Based on the feedback from our players, and improving our game quality, that was our exclusive mode. Through this, we can developing more and more good games.

According to Yuan Hui, who in charge of development in Giant, Southwest China was the most centralized area of Chinese developers. Setting up there , can help to attract talents to Giant, and improve the overall development level. For this moment,there were already many talents joined the company. The team was focusing on 3D online game development, which was also the top in this area.

He also revealed that Giant Interactive already has strong teams on the 2D and 2.5D product development. The foundation of Southwest development center strengthen its ability for 3D development, research system and talent structure.

Giant Interactive has the best server technoloty in China. This March, it set up a lab with Huawei, to further develop leading technogy in server. The new projects in the search center will use the leading server technology.

Giant Interactive is a developer and operator who specialized in online games. With over 500 developer team, Giant Interactive is still looking for new talents. According to its plan, Giant will recruit developer, aiming for a target of 800 to 1000 developer team.

Tang Jun Gained 1 Billion RMB from Job-hopping

The next stop for the career of Tang Jun is decided to be XinHuaDu Industrial Group. According to XinHuaDu, the details about the enrollment of Tang Jun will be released today.

Tang also confirmed to the media that the salary package XinHuaDu offered was 1 Billion RMB, which was not the yearly salary described in the previous report, it was the whole package of the contract period instead.

According to information, Tang Jun took in over 100 million RMB during his tenure in Microsoft China; over 400 million RMB as the Shanda president; and over 1 billion RMB offer from his present employer.
It was said that XinHuaDu Group will have two companies go IPO this year.
As publicly announced by Tang Jun, the 1 billion package including the shares.

As calculated according to  the personal income tax level in China, Tang would have to pay for 450 million RMB for this 1 billion RMB.

Al Gillen, an IDC analyst, estimated that at the end of 2008 nearly 60 percent of consumer PCs and almost 70 percent of business PCs worldwide will still run XP. Microsoft plans to end full support ?including warranty claims and free help with problems ?in April 2009. The company will continue providing a more limited level of service until April 2014.

The9, one of the top three Chinese online game companies, seems being through a rough time recently. right after the shake in its executive team, comes the news of the break of negotiation with MSN China.

 

On April 7th, a industry insider released the information that the negotiation between the9 and MSN China about the share had broken. The spokesmen of the9 and MSN China both gave no comment on the news.

 

"The possibilities of breaking of their negotiation was huge." The insider revealed to our reporter. The news has been confirmed by two the9 related persons, one was the cofunder of Zhu Jun, the other was an amployee of the9.

 

Concering the two possible reasons of the breaking, one was that Microsoft declined the offer since it's too low; second was that Microsofe was not satisfied with the leaking of the privacy in negotiation by the9.

 

Last September, news about the9 and MSN China in negotiation was released. It's said that the9 had reached an agreement with LianHe Investment, which held 50% percent shares of MSN China. The9 offered over 100 million USD to take over its shares, thus made its way into traditional internet services.

AMD Opens New Branch in Chengdu, China

AMD, the world's second largest semiconductor manufacturer after Intel, has formally announced the establishment and operation of its branch in Chengdu.

 

This is a major move that the company has taken since the landing of the its Greater China headquarters in Beijing's Zhongguancun, the investment in a CUP factory in Suzhou and the establishment of a R&D Center in Shanghai. Analysts believe this also marks a further completion of the company's strategic business layout in China.

 

Guo Kezun, president of AMD Greater China, says that the landing of AMD's new branch in Chengdu will make the company's business closer to the consumers in west China. In consideration of Chengdu's strategic location in China, the branch will serve as AMD's strategic base in west China and it will be connected with the company's business in the rest parts of the country.

CGS to Open Training Center in China

The Championship Gaming Series(CGS), member of professional video gaming leagues, has decided to set up a training center in Wuhan, China. The purpose of setting up this facility is to select talented players from more than 50 universities and more than 1.5 million students in Wuhan.

 

 

In addition, the league is building a 1,000-seat arena that will be used exclusively for matches. It also looks for  sponsorship from Microsoft for some high-end matches.

The CGS got six  player drafts in last June:  OPTX from San Francisco, Complexity from Los Angeles, Chimera from Chicago, Venom from Dallas, Core from Carolina and 3DNY from Newyork. Each team has ten players and a manager. Among the players, there are five CS: Source players, two DoA4 players, and two PGR3 players, and a FIFA07 player.

Their sponsors are DirectTV, SkyTV and StarTV. According to Steven Roberts, VP of DirectTV, the three parties has invested millions of dollars in a 4 year-contract with CGS. He said the company believed this was the next booing sports activities a year ago.

PCU of Giant Online Broke 200 Thousand

Last Friday, Giant Interactive announced the PCU (Peak Cocurrent User) of Giant Online has broken 200 thousand at 19:22, March 28th.

 

Shi Yuzhu, CEO of Giant Interactive used to said that the 100 thousand was the bottomline, 15 thousand was the target, and 20 thousand was the expectation for the the close beta.

 

This also means that according to the data published, the open beta of Giant Online only took 4 hours to reach the expectation of Shi.

 

Giant Online was a war-themed free to play mmo. It launched closed beta on December 29th, 2007, and open beta on March 28th. As to the open beta event, Mr. Shi said he will make Giant Online to be the mmo with most belles, and lauched the Belle Attestation system. Every belle can get 500 golds in game. Besides that, every player enters the open beta will gain a test fee of RMB 800. Also there is RMB 5000 cash reward for each realm.

 

Benefit from the nice performance of Giant Online during the open beta, the share price of Giant Interactive (NYSE:GA) raised 10%, ending the market at USD 12.65 on Monday. In last 52 weeks, the highest share price was USD 20.46, with a lowest at USD 9.06 USD.
 

CDC Games Took in USD 118,000 Daily

CDC Games, a business unit of CDC Corporation (NASDAQ: CHINA), and pioneer of the "free-to-play, pay for merchandise" model for online games in China, announced the operation data for last 10 days in March, which was the best performance since its purchase of GT Game. During the last ten days of March, the average income of its games in China was about USD 153,000.

 

Compared with its previous performance, the company made great progress in the profit making. In the first three weeks of March, it took in USD 118,000  daily, while in January and February, the data were only USD 86,000, the same as Q4, 2007.

 

Xuan Wenhao, COO of CDC Games said:'The new success in our profit can be contributed to stable performance of the Yulgang and the heat brought by Special Force in China. Based on this foundation, we believe we can maintain and gain better results in the future.'
