Today Microsoft's hardware unit has offically said goodbye to laser, announcing their BlueTrack technology mouse. As its name implies, BlueTrack uses a high angle blue beam that Microsoft claims is four times larger than previous optical mice. This allows the mouse to take a larger, more precise picture of the surface the mouse rests on. According to Microsoft, the mouse works on virtually any surface, including granite countertops, carpet, or even an unfinished park bench.
Microsoft has announced two SKUs that utilize BlueTrack technology, the Explorer Mouse and the Explorer Mini Mouse. Both mice ship with a USB transceiver that snaps in the bottom of the mouse, allowing you to use the mouse on the go wirelessly with your laptop while on the road. Microsoft claims the mouse has a range of up to 30 ft.
The larger Explorer Mouse is rechargeable, shipping with a base and battery status indicator.
Microsoft lists battery life for the Explorer Mouse is 3 weeks, while the Explorer Mini supposedly lasts "6+ Months" before its batteries must be replaced. The Explorer Mouse retails for $99.95, while the Mini is expected to sell for an MSRP of $79.95.
