Can their incorporation into the PS3 really be far behind? There's little reason to think not, since it would make the consoles cheaper and less power hungry.

Earlier this year, IBM announced that they would be introducing a 45nm Cell Processor. Nikkan Kogyo is reporting that 2009 has now been set as the date of mass production for the chip. Sony is the largest consumer of Cell Processor for their PS3 consoles.

The 45nm Cell Processor is cheaper to produce than the current 65nm Cell and also consumes 40 percent less power to run. This opens the possibility for not only a price drop of the PS3, but also a new 'PS3 Slim' that would run cooler and cost less to produce.
