Next year Toshiba plans to launch "Cell TV", taking the Cell chip powering Sony's PS3 game console and placing it in their next crop of flat-panel TVs launching in fall '09.
According to Toshiba, Cell-powered TVs will bring faster channel changes (today's HDTVs take a few seconds to switch HD channels) and will also be able to decode and play back up to 8 live TV streams. Toshiba's Cell TV was even used to simultaneously display 48 video streams stored on a HDD:
The same Cell TV could also time-slice a single video program in 48 segments and play them back on the same screen at the same time. "This lets viewers choose a specific video segment they want to see," said Nishida.
The Cell processor can also decode eight live broadcast streams simultaneously, Nishida added, when the Cell TV features eight TV tuners.
