In a landmark ruling, 2,000 retired NFL players were awarded $28.1 million, including $21 million in punitive damages.

The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that a federal jury has awarded $28.1 million to over 2,000 retired NFL players, including $21 million in punitive damages. This stems from a lawsuit towards the NFLPA, which alleged that they had been denied proper compensation from certain video games and other merchandise.

The Players' Union argued that retirees had little market value. "This was the only sports union that tried to do retired player licensing," said defense lawyer Jeffrey Kessler.

Ronald Katz, representing the retired players, said that various union leaders, "betrayed the trust of their members."

While the jury ruled that there was no breach of contract with the retired players, it also said that the union failed in its responsibility to represent the retired players. It was found that Players Inc. violated agreements to give an equal share when a half-dozen NFL players' names or images are used.
