EA Sports to offer subscription service for games?

Each year the Madden, NBA Live, FIFA, NCAA et.al series get their annual roster update tagged as a new release, yet the publisher continues to sell the games for $60. However, what if EA Sports was to offer a discount to purchase these games in exchange for an annual subscription fee? According to this article on Gamespot, that's exactly what the company is considering doing.
Unfortunately EA doesn't provide any specifics, issuing a blanket statement to Gamespot: "we believe in the future that there are unique opportunities to launch a subscription-based program, however we have no announcements to make at this time."
Apparently this all started as the result of a fake circular ad suggesting Gamestop was offering a 33% off "Season Pass" program.
