Halo Wars, Microsoft's upcoming real-time strategy title set in the Halo universe, was originally planned for a February release. Today, however, the publisher officially announced that Ensemble Studios' swan song would be released to retailers nationwide on March 3 (Japan and Asia Pacific on Feb. 26 and EMEA on Feb. 27).
Microsoft also said that pre-orders for Halo Wars have begun, and those who do pre-order the game will receive an exclusive in-game Warthog with flame decals. In addition to the standard edition ($59.99), Microsoft is selling a Limited Collector's Edition ($79.99) featuring a special in-game "Honor Guard" Wraith, a graphic novel, six Leader cards and a "Spirit of Fire" patch. Those purchasing this edition also will get early access to the in-game Halo 3 Mythic Map Pack. Microsoft also pointed out that Halo Wars is the first in the Halo franchise to be rated "T" for Teen by the ESRB.
Ensemble Studios' Bruce Shelley said he was shocked to hear that Microsoft was closing down his studio following Halo Wars, but if it's any consolation, Shelley is being inducted into the AIAS Hall of Fame this February.
