Nintendo Europe today announced that it has sold 8.3 million units of its Wii console in 2008. The company says this is the largest annual sales for a home console in European history and a 58 percent increase over the Wii's 2007 sales number. The Wii's installed base in Europe now rests at 14.2 million units.
As for the DS, the portable console set records of its own. The DS sold over 11.2 million units in 2008, the largest annual sales figure for any gaming system in European history. Nintendo's portable flagship has sold over 31 million units in Europe.
"The sales trend on both Wii and Nintendo DS, hardware and software during 2008 shows that more and more people in Europe are enjoying video games as part of their daily lives," said Nintendo of Europe MD, Marketing and PR Laurent Fischer. "This proves that Nintendo's wish to expand the gaming population has strong potential in Europe."
