Wii Play was North America’s software champion in 2008. But it was another Wii game that took the top honors in cumulative sales between the U.S., U.K. and Japan according to a top global markets report compiled by the NPD Group, Enterbrain and GfK Chart-Track.
According to Market for Computer and Video Games, Mario Kart Wii was the top-selling game in 2008, moving some 8.94 million between the three countries. Right behind it was Wii Fit, which sold some 8.31 million units.
The list was rounded out by two multi-platform games and one more Wii title.
Grand Theft Auto 4 was the third biggest seller at 7.29 million across all platforms, with 5.18 million units in sales in the U.S. alone. Meanwhile, Super Smash Brothers Brawl sold 6.32 million, and Call of Duty: World at War rounded out the top five with 5.89 million.
No real surprises in the list, unless you count Call of Duty: World at War’s success in the wake of Call of Duty 4 as surprising. Otherwise, wonder how it will all look after 2009?
