By now the entire world has read about Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez's confession that he took steroids as well as Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps alleged drug (marijuana) use. These two athletes are featured alongside skateboarding legend Tony Hawk and basketball star Kobe Bryant (once accused of rape) in a commercial for Activision's Guitar Hero World Tour.
Despite this controversy, Activision has told the New York Daily News that it has no plans to drop Rodriguez or Phelps from its marketing, "which is nearing the end" of its run.
A sports business consultant, Marc Ganis, told the Post that the controversy surrounding the athletes isn't necessarily a bad thing for the video game's sales. "The target market for Guitar Hero is younger counterculture youth for whom this kind of behavior is not considered very negative," he said.
