Gamers Not Very Interested in Convergence – Magid

Despite the presence of video services and other multimedia capabilities on today's consoles, most gamers don't care very much about convergence (at least for now), according to research from Frank N. Magid Associates.

 

Convergence – the word of the '90s and well into the new millennium. But how come my car isn't a console and my console isn't a car? For that matter, how come my clock radio is still just a clock and a radio?

 

Obviously, some convergence is clearly here for some; people can watch TV on their PC, play games on their TV, and watch video in their car. But still, many consumers buy and prefer dedicated, single purpose (or limited purpose) devices. More importantly, many consumers use few of the features on their converged devices (look at how many consumers use their cell phones for more than talking). 

 

So when it comes to gaming, what is convergence? Obviously the consoles do much more than play games – you can download movies and TV shows, participate in virtual worlds, and talk with your friends through the console online networks. But when you talk to video gamers, of all ages, the majority say they don't really care about a completely converged entertainment device with games, music, movies, IPTV, Internet and more.
