The 's' stands for 'speed' and that's not only for downloading. It will also be a speedier gaming iPhone as well.

During the Worldwide Developers Conference 2009, Apple unveiled the latest version of the iPhone. Apple has dubbed the new model the iPhone 3GS, in which the 'S' stands for 'speed,' because general performance and app loading will be roughly twice as fast.

Additionally, the iPhone 3.0 software will launch June 17, with over 100 new features, including microtransaction payments available in-game. The upgrade will cost $9.95 for iPod Touch users and will be free for iPhone users.

The 3GS will have a three megapixel camera, with certain advanced features plus video capture. The newest iPhone will also have hardware encryption, a digital compass, and voice-controlled features of dialing and music playback. The 3GS will have 30 hours of battery life for music playback, 10 hours for video playback, and 9 hours for Internet -- improvements over the 3G.

For gamers, 3GS will offer superior 3D graphics and better performance overall. ngmoco's Star Defense, which is available today, was one of the titles shown off.

iPhone 3GS will release June 19 for $199. The version with 32GB of internal storage will be available for $299.

Apple knows that in the cut-throat business of cellular phones, you always need to get upgrading to stay ahead of the pack. The 3GS is the latest evolution, and we expect it, plus the newly discounted 3G (which will drop to $99), to do quite well.
