The release of the PSP Go is just a few months away, and as such, some of the gritty details are finally being released. After soliciting questions from gamers about the new hardware, a post on the European PlayStation Blog (via Ars Technica) has revealed a myriad of details about the fourth iteration of the PlayStation Portable.
One of the most notable changes with the Go is the decision to ditch the Memory Stick Pro Duo in favor of the newer M2. The reasoning behind this is just what you'd expect -- the much smaller size of the M2 would allow for the device to be smaller. A necessary, but unfortunate situation for people like myself who have stocked up on Pro Duos over the years.
And much like those memory sticks, accessories for any of the present models of PSP are unlikely to work with the Go due to having a smaller USB connector, among other things. Sony is, however, considering releasing an attachment that would allow for those current-gen accessories to work with the Go, but there's no promise at this point in time. Each Go will ship with a USB cable and a power cord, so the bare essentials will be covered out of the box.
Battery life will remain similar to what PSP owners will be used to -- roughly 3 to 6 hours when playing games and 3 to 5 hours when watching videos. What will change is finally being able to access the XMB without completely quitting out of your game altogether. Rather than quit, the game will be suspended temporarily, allowing you to navigate the XMB. Other new functionality includes Bluetooth support and a new clock and calendar.
