E3 gave gamers a glimpse at Sony's unnamed motion control system for the PS3. Today, Kotaku revealed some more details of the PlayStation Eye powered technology that Sony Computer Entertainment sent to its developers.
SCE confirmed that the new motion controller is indeed set to launch in Spring 2010. They say the controller will function "with any games across all genres from casual to core" and will launch with a "range of first-party and third-party content."
The wand itself will have rumble capabilities and will work with the PlayStation Eye for "face-tracking and head-tracking capability already in the PS3 SDK." Up to four of these motion wands will be playable at the same time and will also work concurrently with the microphone built into the PlayStation Eye for voice recognition.
Sony is apparently contemplating a combined motion controller/Sixaxis options, such as the wand being used as a sword and the DualShock 3 as a shield. The motion controller will take some processing power, and Sony mentioned that the "motion-tracking library has some SPU overhead and has an impact on memory as well, although these will be minimized."
No SKU plans, such as price, bundles or specific launch dates, were mentioned.
