Horse riding, rock climbing, gambling, dating, clubbing and exercise; these are but a mere few of the options available to people looking for a recreational activity. With so much choice of possible activities in the world these days, how does online gaming stack up against everything else out there?

In this big old world of ours where the amount of choice one is subjected to seems endless, you’d think that the relatively lonely, unsociable world of online gaming would be a last resort choice for the multitudes. However, millions of ongoing subscribers the world over would prove said person’s thinking wrong. So what is it then that online gaming has that sports, dating and the like, lack?

Let’s examine the facts. These days the vast majority of people have access to a computer and internet has become a luxury we take for granted. Therefore everyone has access to the platform that allows online gaming. So the initial setup cost is invariably nil. Not to mention that you can try it out from the convenience of your own home.

Indeed, as far as an indication of current times goes, with the economic recession hitting worldwide and disposable income becoming more and more scarce, online gaming is beginning to look hugely attractive to people of all dispositions. While other social activities involve a constant input of funds, many gaming genres can be enjoyed with the bare essentials of a computer and an internet connection; pretty much commonplace items nowadays. So players, athletes, clubbers, and everyone else for that matter, now is the time to consider how your budget might benefit from an online gaming hobby.

In addition, there are no judgments made against you by the computer. If you suck, a gamer with a douche bag alias may tell you so but he can’t see you and you can easily ignore them. You’ll never be judged for being fat, ugly, covered in acne, awkward or for being unsociable. You are merely another entity in an online world, which may or may not look like their avatar.

Let’s try and match that up to any other social event. Do you think the pretty girl or handsome boy at the bar will have no initial judgments of you based on first impressions, or the people you play sports with won’t laugh when you fail to keep up? The inherent ‘confidence safety’ of online gaming is fantastic for one’s ego. Especially when you consider that you can become an adept gamer in a matter of hours, when it would take weeks, months, or even years to perfect other activities such as dating, sports or... shudder... dancing.

For the majority of us, real-world social activities are demanding of money as well as mental and emotional energy. Gaming, on the other hand, is cheap and allows you as much or as little time as you want and almost anyone can be a gamer. Not everyone can become the best of the best in the gaming world, but we’re all able to earn the title of player.

It all comes down to the protection of self image when trying something new. Online gaming serves and protects, while the real world alternatives are a much more brutal and emotionally wrenching experience; sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse. Regardless of how you view it, as far as experience versus reward goes, online gaming ranks pretty high up there amongst the world choices.
