SCEI president Kaz Hirai today revealed Sony's plans for a new service called "Life with PlayStation." The online service would utilize the same globe found in the Folding@Home program and users would then be able to spin the globe to locate regional weather and news. This seems somewhat similar to the Wii's News and Weather channels. A launch date was not provided, but it's likely that Sony will go into further detail at E3 next month.
Elsewhere in the presentation Hirai mentioned that the PlayStation Network now has 9.8 million members who have downloaded 170 million pieces of content (86 peta bytes, equal to about 17 million single layer DVDs).
Hirai also talked about the growth of both the PS3 and PSP installed bases. For the second half of the 2007 fiscal year worldwide PSP shipped numbers totaled 9.18 million (146 percent increase year-over-year), while the PS3 shipped 7.23 million units during that period (a 200 percent increase).
